Types of Lung Cancer
Based on histopathology or microscopic examinations lung cancers are mainly divided into two types – Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). NSCLC is the most common type of lung cancer and is further divided into adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, epidermoid carcinoma and large cell carcinoma. SCLC develops and spread faster than NSCLC.
Generally Known Causes of Lung Cancer
People who smoke have the largest risk of getting lung cancer. This risk increases with the number of cigarettes and the years of smoking. Even if you quit after smoking for many years, it can significantly reduce the risk of lung cancer. Certain ostensible causative factors known as risk factors are believed to be increasing the chance for the development of lung cancer are listed below:

Symptoms of Lung Cancer
Lung cancer does not show any symptoms in its early stages. Signs and symptoms shown by lung cancer in its advanced stages are detailed below.

Diagnosis of Lung Cancer
We at SGHHCC and SGCCRC mainly depend on the conventional diagnostic procedures for lung cancer. The usual tests that are carried out to diagnose lung cancer are discussed below.
- Imaging tests: X-ray images can reveal abnormal masses in your lungs and CT scan and MRI scan will reveal lesions existing in your lungs which will not be detected in the X-ray.
- Sputum cytology: If your cough is producing sputum, examining them in a microscope can reveal the presence of cancer in your lungs.
- Biopsy: A sample of abnormal cells from your lungs will be removed and examined under a microscope. This procedure is known as biopsy. Samples may be taken from nearby organs like liver and lymph nodes where the cancer is suspected to have spread through metastasis. Generally we are not in favour of needle biopsy.
Stages of Lung Cancer
Stage I: In this stage the cancer has not spread to lymph nodes and the tumor is less than 2 inches in size.
Stage II: In this stage the cancer would have spread to the nearby lymph nodes and the tumor would be larger than 2 inches in size.
Stage III: In this case the tumor will be very large and the cancer would have invaded the nearby organs also.
Stage IV: In this stage the cancer would have spread to the distant organs in the body
