Lymphoma is the name of a common type of blood cancer which affects the lymphatic system especially the lymphocytes and lymph nodes. Lymphoma can be broadly classified into two categories based on the microscopic differentiation of the manifestation of the tumor associated with lymphoma. They are Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL). Lymphocyte is a type of white blood cell which is an important part of our immune system. When these lymphocytes start growing uncontrollably it can be considered as the starting point of lymphoma. Cancerous lymphocytes travel to many parts of the body which includes spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow, other organs and form tumors there which, in course of time, becomes cancer.

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL)

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma originates in the lymphatic system. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a group of closely related cancers with similar symptoms. The main components in this group are B – cell lymphoma and T – cell lymphoma. T-cell lymphomas originate from abnormal T lymphocytes and B – cell lymphoma originates from abnormal B lymphocytes. 85 % of lymphomas are B cell lymphomas and the r-e+maining 15 % are T cell lymphomas. When Reed-Sternberg cells are present in the lymphoma tumor it is called HL and others are generally called NHL. NHL constitute majority of Lymphomas.

Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL)

Hodgkin lymphoma is the cancer of the lymphatic system. Hodgkin lymphoma is generally found in teens and young people in the age group of 20 to 35. Hodgkin lymphoma shows Reed-Sternberg cells during microscopic examination of the HL tumor.

Generally Known Causes of Lymphoma

The exact cause of lymphoma is not known to the present medical science. The general ostensible conditions which can increase the risk of lymphoma development are detailed below:

• Exposure to chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers for prolonged period
• Hereditary tendency from a family history of lymphoma

Diagnosis of Lymphoma

Diagnosis of lymphoma includes the following examinations:

• Physical examination: The doctor will be physically examining the patient to identify the enlargement of the lymph node/s.
• Blood tests: The doctor may advice blood examination to see the complete blood count including the peripheral blood smear. The complete blood chemistry also will reveal the complete status of functioning of the body.
• Imaging tests: Imaging tests such as X-ray, ultrasound. CT scan, MRI scan, PET scan, etc. are done to identify, locate and to understand the size, shape, etc. of the tumor growth.
• Biopsy studies: We at SGHHCC and SGCCRC appreciate the excisional biopsy with the complete removal of the enlarged suspicious lymph node and doing the cytology study through microscopic examination.
• Cytogenetic studies: This can be done to study the presence of abnormal chromosomes in the nucleus of the affected lymph nodes.
• Molecular genetic tests: These tests include florescent in situ hybridization (FISH), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), etc. to study changes in the genes and chromosomes which cannot be studied with microscope
